Apesar disso, o empate sem gols com a Eslováquia garantiu o time comandado pelo técnico Roy Hodgson nas oitavas de final, em partida disputada em Saint-Étienne. Harry Kane e Jamie Vardy foram os maiores goleadores do campeonato nacional, mas passaram em branco nesta segunda-feira.

Com o triunfo, os ingleses chegaram ao cinco pontos e terminaram a fase de grupos na segunda colocação do Grupo B, atrás apenas do surpreendente País de Gales. A seleção liderada por Gareth Bale terminou sua participação na fase com seis pontos, ao vencer a Rússia por 3 a 0.

O resultado eliminou os russos (com apenas um ponto) e manteve a Eslováquia com chances de avançar à fase de mata-mata. O time eslovaco ficou com quatro pontos, na terceira posição. Nesta ampliada Eurocopa, com 24 seleções, garantem vaga nas oitavas os quatro melhores terceiros colocados da fase de grupos.
