Man killed professor at the University of California was doctorate in engineering

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles Police identified Thursday the gunman who killed a teacher at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA, its acronym in English) before taking his own life as Mainak Sarkar, a student of engineering from school.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department, Jane Kim, confirmed that the man was recognized as Sarkar, but declined to give further details. Sarkar was graduate student, reported the Los Angeles Times, citing police.

The shooting led to the closure of the vast urban campus for about two hours on Wednesday as police confirmed that Sarkar and his victim, the engineering professor William Klug, 39, were the only people involved in the incident.

The office of coroner of Los Angeles testified that Klug died in the attack.

University officials said that classes would be resumed on Thursday and will therapists available to students, faculty and staff.

"Our hearts are saddened this evening while the family of our campus mourns the sudden and tragic deaths of two people on our campus earlier today," said Chancellor Gene Block in a statement.

Police recovered a firearm and what may be a suicide note at the scene, said the head of the LAPD, Charlie Beck.
